Tom Cheek


Tom is both a professional musician and a passionate music educator. He qualified as a music teacher in 2011 at Canterbury Christ Church University. During his teacher training he successfully completed teaching placements at Blatchington Mill School, Chailey School and BHASVIC. He taught mixed ability classes catering to a range of learning needs, and worked according to the National Curriculum, GCSE and AS/A2 Level music syllabuses. Prior to his teacher training, he achieved a first class honours degree in Music Performance from the University of Brighton.

He previously taught classical guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar in schools for Scottish Borders Council, and has also taught many groups of young musicians aged 8-18, at Brighton Rock School. At the school he taught guitar, bass, drums, vocals and keyboards in workshop style group sessions, and he prepared his students for performances at the Pavilion Theatre in Brighton.

He is also a professional bass guitarist with a busy schedule of gigs across the southeast. He currently plays with funk/soul/disco covers band Oomphf, who have a residency at Casablanca’s Jazz Club in Brighton. Previous highlights include touring Europe and the States with down-tempo electronica group Blue States, supporting Groove Armada and Saint Etienne. Blue States are signed to the Memphis Industries record label.

As a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer he has recorded an album of his own songs, and has collaborated with many songwriting artists.

He lives in Newhaven with his wife and two children.
